What it can cost you

Downsides we could quote

Quoted clauses that can affect your privacy, money, or right to go to court — including terms that follow you to other products.

Highest-cost clauses first

High cost

Broad license to user content

You are agreeing to give Meta extensive legal rights to use and share your creative content.

“you grant us a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, and worldwide license to host, use, distribute, modify, run, copy, publicly perform or display, translate, and create derivative works of your content”

What that means: Meta can reuse, sell access to, or modify your posts and images without further permission.

The terms grant a very broad, perpetual (until deletion) license that allows Meta to sublicense and modify your content, extending beyond simple service provision.

High cost

Tracking you across apps

You are agreeing to cross-site tracking for advertising purposes.

“we use data about the connections you make, the choices and settings you select, and what you share and do on and off our Products - to personalize your experience.”

What that means: Your behavior across the wider internet is used to target ads on Meta platforms.

Meta tracks user activity both on and off their products to build detailed profiles for ad targeting.

Medium cost

Difficult or incomplete deletion

You are agreeing to wait up to 180 days for complete removal of your data from all systems.

“It may take up to 90 days to delete content after we begin the account deletion process or receive a content deletion request... After the content is deleted, it may take us up to another 90 days to remove it from backups”

What that means: Your data remains accessible to Meta for months after you ask for it to be gone.

There is a significant delay between when you request deletion and when data is actually removed from active servers and backup systems.
