What it can cost you

Downsides we could quote

Quoted clauses that can affect your privacy, money, or right to go to court — including terms that follow you to other products.

Highest-cost clauses first

High cost

Broad license to user content

You are agreeing to let Meta use, copy, and share your photos, videos, and posts freely.

“Specifically, when you share, post, or upload content that is covered by intellectual property rights on or in connection with our Products, you grant us a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, and worldwide license to host, use, distribute, modify, run, copy, publicly perform or display, translate, and create derivative works of your content (consistent with your privacy and application settings).”

What that means: You lose control over how your content is used, copied, or shared by Meta or its partners indefinitely.

Meta takes a broad license to user content that includes transferability and sublicensing. This allows them to use user-created photos, videos, and posts in ways that go beyond basic hosting.

High cost

Indefinite retention

You are agreeing that your data may stay in backups for up to 90 days after you request deletion.

“While the deletion process for such content is being undertaken, the content is no longer visible to other users. After the content is deleted, it may take us up to another 90 days to remove it from backups and disaster recovery systems.”

What that means: Your data persists on Meta's servers even after you request its removal, delaying true deletion.

The document states that deleted content remains in backup and disaster recovery systems for up to 90 additional days after the initial deletion period.

High cost

Liability shifted onto the user

You are agreeing to hold Meta harmless for most damages and accept their liability is capped at a very low amount.

“Our Products, however, are provided "as is," and we make no guarantees that they always will be safe, secure, or error-free... To the extent permitted by law, we also DISCLAIM ALL WARRANTIES... Our aggregate liability arising out of or relating to these Terms or the Meta Products will not exceed the greater of $100 or the amount you have paid us in the past twelve months.”

What that means: If the service fails or causes issues, you cannot recover significant losses and must accept the service 'as is' without guarantees.

Meta disclaims all warranties and limits its liability to a maximum of $100 or what you paid, leaving the user responsible for most risks associated with using the service.

High cost

Tracking you across apps

You are agreeing to allow Meta to track your activity on and off their products to show you relevant ads.

“We use your personal data to help determine which personalized ads to show you... We use data about the connections you make, the choices and settings you select, and what you share and do on and off our Products - to personalize your experience.”

What that means: Your behavior across various websites and apps is monitored to target ads to you.

Meta uses personal data, including activity both on and off their products, to track interests and serve personalized advertisements.

Medium cost

Difficult or incomplete deletion

You are agreeing that deleting your account won't remove content you posted as an admin or in shared albums.

“Account deletion does not automatically delete content that you post as an admin of a page or content that you create collectively with other users, such as photos in Shared Albums which may continue to be visible to other album members.”

What that means: Some of your content remains visible to others even if you delete your main account.

Deleting your personal account does not guarantee the removal of content you created on pages or in shared spaces like Shared Albums.

Medium cost

Terms follow you to parks, stores, and other products

You are agreeing to follow extra rules if you use Meta for business or commercial activities.

“For instance, if you access or use our Products for commercial or business purposes, such as buying ads, selling products, developing apps, managing a group or Page for your business, or using our measurement services, you must agree to our Commercial Terms.”

What that means: Additional legal agreements apply if you use business tools, adding complexity to your obligations.

Using certain features or business functions on Meta products binds you to separate supplemental terms, such as the Commercial Terms.
