In short

  • By using Facebook and related products, you accept a contract that allows Meta to show you personalized ads based on your data and grant them broad rights to use your content.
  • You agree to strict rules about account conduct, accurate identity, and non-transferability, while accepting limited liability protections for the service itself.

What it can cost you

Downsides we could quote

Quoted clauses that can affect your privacy, money, or right to go to court — including terms that follow you to other products.

Highest-cost clauses first

High cost

Broad license to user content

You are agreeing to give Meta a broad, sublicensable license to modify and distribute your content.

“you grant us a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, and worldwide license to host, use, distribute, modify, run, copy, publicly perform or display, translate, and create derivative works of your content”

What that means: You lose exclusive control over how your photos, videos, and posts are used, shared, or modified by Meta and its partners.

Meta takes a very broad license that allows them to modify, sub-license, and distribute your creative work globally and forever until deletion, going far beyond simple hosting needs.

High cost

Liability shifted onto the user

You are agreeing to waive warranty protections and limit Meta's liability for damages and data loss.

“Our Products, however, are provided "as is," ... DISCLAIM ALL WARRANTIES... To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law under no circumstance will we be liable to you for any lost profits, revenues, information, or data”

What that means: You bear the risk of data loss or service failure with no financial recourse against Meta for most damages.

Meta disclaims all warranties and limits its financial liability for damages, losses, or data issues to the maximum extent allowed by law.

High cost

Tracking you across apps

You are agreeing to cross-platform tracking where your on-site and off-site data are combined for personalization.

“we use data about the connections you make, the choices and settings you select, and what you share and do on and off our Products - to personalize your experience.”

What that means: Your activities inside and outside the Meta ecosystem are monitored to tailor ads and feeds.

Meta tracks user behavior both on and off its own platforms to build profiles for personalized advertising and content recommendations.

Medium cost

Difficult or incomplete deletion

You are agreeing to a deletion process that includes a delay where data remains in backup systems.

“After the content is deleted, it may take us up to another 90 days to remove it from backups and disaster recovery systems.”

What that means: Your data may remain recoverable in backup archives for three months after you ask for it to be gone.

The terms explicitly state that data persists in backup systems for up to 90 days after deletion requests, meaning immediate erasure is not guaranteed.

Medium cost

Unilateral changes with little or no notice

You are agreeing to be bound by future changes to the terms upon continued use.

“We will notify you... at least 30 days before we make changes to these Terms... Once any updated Terms are in effect, you will be bound by them if you continue to access or use our Products.”

What that means: You may be bound by updated terms automatically if you keep using the service after the notice period.

Meta can change the terms with 30 days notice, and continued use constitutes acceptance of the new terms, limiting user veto power.

Medium cost

Third parties handle data you submit

You are agreeing to data sharing among Meta companies for safety and financial services.

“share data across Meta Companies when we detect misuse... share information with Meta Companies that provide financial products and services”

What that means: Your data may be accessed by other Meta units for financial or safety checks.

Data is shared with other entities within the Meta family for safety, security, and financial product integration, involving third parties within the corporate umbrella.

Lower cost

Data sold or shared with third parties

You are agreeing to a model where advertisers pay for targeted exposure rather than purchasing your personal data directly.

“We don’t sell your personal data to advertisers... We don’t share information that directly identifies you... with advertisers unless you give us specific permission.”

What that means: Your direct identity is not sold to advertisers, though your behavioral data drives ad targeting.

The document explicitly denies selling personal data or sharing direct identifiers, clarifying that advertisers buy audience reach, not personal datasets.
