In short

  • This document governs your use of Facebook, Messenger, and other Meta services.
  • It allows the company to track your activity across sites and apps to show you personalized ads, though they state they do not sell your personal data directly.
  • You accept these terms by continuing to use the products after January 20, 2027.

What you accept

If you tap Agree

Everyday words for the material promises and rights you give up. Each line includes a quote from the document.

  1. 01

You are agreeing that Meta can show you personalized ads based on your personal data and that advertisers may see reports about how people interact with their content.

    Other products, stores, or brands

“By using our Products, you agree that we can show you ads that we think may be relevant to you and your interests. We use your personal data to help determine which personalized ads to show you.”
  2. 02

You are agreeing to grant Meta a license to use, copy, and share your photos and videos so they can provide the service.

    This product

“you grant us a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, and worldwide license to host, use, distribute, modify, run, copy, publicly perform or display, translate, and create derivative works of your content”
  3. 03

You are agreeing that deleting your account does not instantly remove all copies of your content from backups and disaster recovery systems.

    This product

“After the content is deleted, it may take us up to another 90 days to remove it from backups and disaster recovery systems.”

What it can cost you

Downsides we could quote

Quoted clauses that can affect your privacy, money, or right to go to court — including terms that follow you to other products.

Highest-cost clauses first

High cost

Tracking you across apps

You are agreeing to allow tracking of your activity on and off Meta's platforms to personalize experiences.

“we use data about the connections you make, the choices and settings you select, and what you share and do on and off our Products - to personalize your experience.”

What that means: Your behavior on third-party websites is used to target ads to you without your direct interaction with those sites.

Meta tracks user activity both inside its products and on external websites ('on and off our Products') to build detailed profiles for advertising.

Medium cost

Broad license to user content

You are agreeing to give Meta wide-ranging rights to use and share your uploaded content.

“you grant us a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, and worldwide license to host, use, distribute, modify, run, copy, publicly perform or display, translate, and create derivative works of your content”

What that means: Meta has extensive legal rights to reuse, share, or alter your creative work under a broad license.

The license granted is broad, allowing Meta to sublicense, modify, and distribute user content globally, even if this goes beyond strict technical necessity.

Medium cost

Difficult or incomplete deletion

You are agreeing to a delayed deletion process where data stays in backups for up to 90 days.

“it may take us up to another 90 days to remove it from backups and disaster recovery systems.”

What that means: Your data remains recoverable for months after you request deletion, limiting true erasure.

Account deletion is not immediate; data persists in backup systems for up to 90 days after the initial deletion process begins.

Medium cost

Indefinite retention

You are agreeing to indefinite retention of content if required for safety, security, or legal obligations.

“the content will be retained for no longer than is necessary for the purposes for which it has been retained (the exact duration will vary on a case-by-case basis).”

What that means: Your data may be retained for an unpredictable period if Meta deems it necessary for legal or safety reasons.

Content can be kept indefinitely if deletion would restrict safety, security, or legal compliance efforts, with no fixed timeframe defined.

Medium cost

Terms follow you to parks, stores, and other products

You are agreeing that supplemental terms for music, avatars, and AI features become part of your agreement with Meta.

“If you post or share content containing music, you must comply with our Music Guidelines... If you use Avatars, then the Avatar Terms also apply... If you use our AI products and features, the Meta AI Terms also apply.”

What that means: You may inadvertently agree to extra restrictions and policies by using various features within the main app.

Using specific features like music sharing, avatars, or AI tools binds you to additional, separate sets of terms rather than just these general ToS.

Lower cost

Children’s data

You are agreeing to adhere to the age restriction prohibiting use by anyone under 13.

“You are under 13 years old.”

What that means: Children under 13 are barred from creating accounts, but the policy does not address data collection from older children.

The terms explicitly prohibit users under the age of 13 from using the service.
