What it can cost you

Downsides we could quote

Quoted clauses that can affect your privacy, money, or right to go to court — including terms that follow you to other products.

Highest-cost clauses first

High cost

Broad license to user content

You are agreeing to give Meta broad, worldwide, and sub-licensable rights to use and modify the content you share on the platform.

“you grant us a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, and worldwide license to host, use, distribute, modify, run, copy, publicly perform or display, translate, and create derivative works of your content”

What that means: You allow Meta to use, modify, and share your photos and posts with third parties even after you post them.

Meta takes a very broad, perpetual license that allows them to modify, sub-license, and distribute your content globally. While it ends upon deletion, the scope of rights granted is extensive and covers all intellectual property you upload.

High cost

Liability shifted onto the user

You are agreeing that Meta provides its services "as is" without guarantees and limits its financial liability to $100 or recent payments.

“Our Products, however, are provided "as is," and we make no guarantees that they always will be safe, secure, or error-free, or that they will function without disruptions... Our aggregate liability... will not exceed the greater of $100 or the amount you have paid us in the past twelve months.”

What that means: If the service fails or causes issues, Meta’s financial responsibility is capped at $100, leaving you with limited recourse for losses.

The document explicitly disclaims all warranties, including those of merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose. It caps Meta's liability for damages to a maximum of $100 unless you have paid more than that recently, shifting risk onto the user.

Medium cost

Difficult or incomplete deletion

You are agreeing to a delayed deletion process where data remains in backups and may be retained by other users for an extended period.

“After the content is deleted, it may take us up to another 90 days to remove it from backups and disaster recovery systems.”

What that means: Your data is not immediately gone; it can linger in Meta's backup systems and remain accessible to others who downloaded it.

Even after you delete content or an account, copies persist in backup systems for up to 180 days (90 days initial plus 90 days from backups). Other users may also retain copies under the license if they do not delete them.

Medium cost

Unilateral changes with little or no notice

You are agreeing to accept future updates to the Terms simply by continuing to use the Product if you do not delete your account.

“Once any updated Terms are in effect, you will be bound by them if you continue to access or use our Products.”

What that means: The rules governing your account can change whenever Meta decides, and you are automatically bound by the new rules just by keeping your account open.

Meta can change the contract terms at any time. Continued use of the service serves as acceptance of the new terms, meaning the company modifies the agreement without needing fresh, explicit consent for every change.
