In short

  • You are agreeing to Meta's Terms of Service for Facebook and related products.
  • The document allows them to show you personalized ads based on your data and takes a broad license to content you upload.
  • It also limits their liability and controls how account deletion works.

What you accept

If you tap Agree

Everyday words for the material promises and rights you give up. Each line includes a quote from the document.

  1. 01

You are agreeing to the broad, sublicensable license they take to photos and videos you share.

    This product

“you grant us a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, and worldwide license to host, use, distribute, modify, run, copy, publicly perform or display, translate, and create derivative works of your content”
  2. 02

You are agreeing to let them use your name and profile picture next to ads without paying you.

    This product

“You give us permission to use your name and profile picture and information about actions you have taken on Facebook next to or in connection with ads... without any compensation to you.”
  3. 03

You are agreeing to use the service at your own risk with limited legal recourse against Meta.

    This product

“our Products... are provided 'as is'... we DISCLAIM ALL WARRANTIES... To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law under no circumstance will we be liable to you for any lost profits...”

What it can cost you

Downsides we could quote

Quoted clauses that can affect your privacy, money, or right to go to court — including terms that follow you to other products.

Highest-cost clauses first

High cost

Broad license to user content

You are agreeing to give Meta extensive legal rights to use and sub-license your uploaded content.

“you grant us a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, and worldwide license to host, use, distribute, modify, run, copy, publicly perform or display, translate, and create derivative works of your content”

What that means: Meta can use your creative work in ways you might not expect, including giving rights to other companies.

They get permanent rights to share, modify, and sub-license your photos and videos globally, even after you delete them from your feed if others keep them.

High cost

Liability shifted onto the user

You are agreeing that Meta has no liability for damages or data loss arising from using their services.

“Our Products... are provided 'as is'... we DISCLAIM ALL WARRANTIES... To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law under no circumstance will we be liable to you for any lost profits, revenues, information, or data...”

What that means: You hold the risk if your data is lost or the service fails, with little financial recovery possible.

They refuse to guarantee the service is safe or error-free and cap what they owe you if something goes wrong.

High cost

Tracking you across apps

You are agreeing to have your activity on and off their sites monitored for ad targeting purposes.

“We use your personal data to help determine which personalized ads to show you... We use data about the connections you make, the choices and settings you select, and what you share and do on and off our Products - to personalize your experience.”

What that means: Your behavior across the web and app ecosystem is used to sell you tailored ads.

They track your activity both on and off their platforms to build profiles for targeted advertising.

High cost

Terms follow you to parks, stores, and other products

You are agreeing to terms that span across Facebook, Messenger, and other Meta Company Products.

“These Terms... govern your access and use of Facebook, Messenger, and the other products, websites, features, apps, services, technologies, and software we offer... (For example, your use of Instagram is subject to the Instagram Terms of Use).”

What that means: Accepting these terms may bind you to rules that apply across Facebook, Messenger, and potentially other affiliated apps depending on specific product links.

The terms explicitly cover multiple distinct products and brands owned by the same entity.

Medium cost

Difficult or incomplete deletion

You are agreeing to wait up to 180 days total for your data to be fully removed from active and backup systems.

“It may take up to 90 days to delete content after we begin the account deletion process... After the content is deleted, it may take us up to another 90 days to remove it from backups and disaster recovery systems.”

What that means: You cannot instantly erase your history or profile from all their internal archives.

Your data stays visible during a 90-day grace period and remains in backup systems for an additional 90 days.
