In short

  • This document allows Meta to show you personalized ads based on your activity and data.
  • It grants them a broad license to use, share, and modify any content you upload.
  • You also accept that they can change these rules without stopping your account, hold no liability for service issues, and resolve disputes in a specific court.

What you accept

If you tap Agree

Everyday words for the material promises and rights you give up. Each line includes a quote from the document.

  1. 01

You are agreeing that Meta can use your personal data, such as activity and interests, to determine which personalized ads to show you.

    This product

“We use your personal data, such as information about your activity and interests, to show you personalized ads and sponsored content that may be more relevant to you.”
  2. 02

You are agreeing to give Meta a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, and worldwide license to host, use, distribute, modify, run, copy, publicly perform or display, translate, and create derivative works of your content.

    This product

“You grant us a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, and worldwide license to host, use, distribute, modify, run, copy, publicly perform or display, translate, and create derivative works of your content (consistent with your privacy and application settings).”
  3. 03

You are agreeing that if you do not agree to updated Terms, you must delete your account and stop accessing or using Facebook and other Meta Products.

    This product

“Once any updated Terms are in effect, you will be bound by them if you continue to access or use our Products.”
  4. 04

You are agreeing that Meta makes no guarantees about safety or security and disclaims all warranties for its Products.

    This product

“Our Products, however, are provided "as is," and we make no guarantees that they always will be safe, secure, or error-free, or that they will function without disruptions, delays, or imperfections. To the extent permitted by law, we also DISCLAIM ALL WARRANTIES...”

What it can cost you

Downsides we could quote

Quoted clauses that can affect your privacy, money, or right to go to court — including terms that follow you to other products.

Highest-cost clauses first

High cost

Unilateral changes with little or no notice

You are agreeing to be bound by updated Terms through continued use.

“Unless otherwise required by law, we will notify you before we make changes to these Terms... Once any updated Terms are in effect, you will be bound by them if you continue to access or use our Products.”

What that means: You lose control over contract updates; using the service after changes means you accepted them.

Meta can update the Terms at any time and binds users to new versions simply by continued use, rather than requiring explicit renewed consent.

High cost

Liability shifted onto the user

You are agreeing to restrict your ability to sue for damages to a maximum of $100 or your recent payments.

“Our aggregate liability arising out of or relating to these Terms or the Meta Products will not exceed the greater of $100 or the amount you have paid us in the past twelve months.”

What that means: If something goes wrong causing major loss, the company pays you very little.

Meta limits its financial responsibility for any damages or losses to a very small cap, leaving users with little recourse for significant issues.

Medium cost

Difficult or incomplete deletion

You are agreeing to a delay in complete data removal due to backup retention policies.

“After the content is deleted, it may take us up to another 90 days to remove it from backups and disaster recovery systems.”

What that means: Your data remains recoverable by the company for weeks after you think it is gone.

Deletion is not immediate; data persists in backup systems for up to 90 days after the initial deletion request or account closure.

Medium cost

Jury trial or court access waived

You are agreeing to submit to jurisdiction in California courts.

“You and Meta each agree that any claim, cause of action, or dispute between us... shall be resolved exclusively in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California or a state court located in San Mateo County.”

What that means: Legal battles must happen in California, increasing cost and difficulty for most users.

Disputes must be litigated in specific California courts, forcing users out of their local legal systems.
