  • The service is free for users but funds itself by showing personalized ads based on your personal data.
  • You grant Meta broad permissions to use your content and allow them to change these terms with notice.

What it can cost you

Downsides we could quote

Quoted clauses that can affect your privacy, money, or right to go to court — including terms that follow you to other products.

Highest-cost clauses first

High cost

Broad license to user content

You are agreeing to grant Meta extensive rights to use, modify, and sublicense your content indefinitely until deletion.

“you grant us a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, and worldwide license to host, use, distribute, modify, run, copy, publicly perform or display, translate, and create derivative works of your content”

What that means: You lose exclusive control over how your photos, videos, and text are used and distributed by Meta and its partners.

Meta obtains a broad legal right to use your creative work, including modifying it and allowing others to do so, across all Meta platforms.

High cost

Tracking you across apps

You are agreeing to allow Meta to track your activity on and off their products to personalize ads and experiences.

“we use data about the connections you make, the choices and settings you select, and what you share and do on and off our Products - to personalize your experience.”

What that means: Your behavior across the wider internet is collected and analyzed to target ads at you without you explicitly opting in per site.

The company tracks your activity not just within their apps, but also on websites and apps outside their ecosystem to build a profile for advertising.

Medium cost

Difficult or incomplete deletion

You are agreeing to a delayed deletion process where content may remain in backup systems for up to 90 days.

“After the content is deleted, it may take us up to another 90 days to remove it from backups and disaster recovery systems.”

What that means: Your information remains recoverable and stored by Meta long after you believe it has been erased.

Account and content deletion is not immediate; data persists in backup systems for significant periods after you request removal.

Medium cost

Indefinite retention

You are agreeing that Meta's license to your content continues even if you delete it, if others have used it.

“where your content has been used by others in accordance with this license and they have not deleted it (in which case this license will continue to apply until that content is deleted)”

What that means: Your content remains legally licensed to Meta as long as others interact with it, preventing true erasure.

If you post something that friends or groups save or repost, Meta retains its license to that content even if you delete your original post.

Lower cost

Unilateral changes with little or no notice

You are agreeing to be bound by future changes to the Terms if you continue to use the product after notification.

“We will notify you ... at least 30 days before we make changes to these Terms... Once any updated Terms are in effect, you will be bound by them if you continue to access or use our Products.”

What that means: The rules governing your account can change without your explicit re-signing, binding you to new terms if you keep using the service.

Meta can modify the agreement with 30 days' notice, and continued use serves as acceptance of those changes.

Lower cost

Location or sensitive-data over-collection

You are agreeing to allow Meta to share your data across its family of products for safety and enforcement purposes.

“We share data across Meta Companies when we detect misuse or harmful conduct by someone using one of our Products or to help keep Meta Products, users and the community safe.”

What that means: Your data is linked across different Meta platforms to enforce bans or restrict features based on activity elsewhere.

Data is shared between Meta entities like Facebook and Instagram to enforce safety and identify bad actors.
